The sports culture in Kunshan has made astounding advances after years of rapid development, and badminton has become increasingly popular among Kunshan’s citizens. On May 25, 2014, the Kunshan delegation attended the Thomas and Uber Cups bidding presentation meeting held in New Delhi, India, and won the bid, making Kunshan the first county-level city in China to be awarded hosting rights for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals. The event had been held in Hong Kong in 1996 and 1998, Guangzhou in 2002, and Wuhan in 2012. Winning the bid proves that Kunshan is becoming an internationalized city that has increasingly attracted the attention from world sports organizations.

Hosting the 2016 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals will not only help local residents in Kunshan to become fans of badminton, but also will serve as a milestone for the sustainable development of the sport in Kunshan. With support from the Badminton World Federation and the Chinese Badminton Association, we are fully confident to host the 2016 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals as a safe, splendid and successful global event featuring the traditional beauty of China’s southern water towns. We will make every effort to make this a distinctive and innovative sporting event to showcase a modern, glamorous Kunshan as part of the city’s new initiatives to improve municipal management and the quality of life for its citizens.
