On June 11, 2015, Thomas Lund, Secretary-General of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) visited Kunshan and inspected, in the company of Jiang Hao, Deputy Mayor of Kunshan, the hotels to accommodate the BWF officials and athletes during the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2016 Kunshan (the “T&U Cups 2016”) and the facilities and services to be provided for the competitions. Mr. Lund began his visit at the Kunshan Sports Center Gymnasium, where he inspected the seating and lighting arrangements. When talking with the working staff, Mr. Lund inquired about the locations of the respective entrances for the athletes and media representatives, and had an in-person experience of walking through the athletes’ entrances. Other venues inspected included the warm-up area, the Drug Test Center and the Media Center. After the inspection, Mr. Lund was briefed on the preparatory work for the tournament.
In the afternoon, Mr. Lund and his team met with Du Xiaogang, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Kunshan Municipal Committee and Mayor of Kunshan. According to Du, Kunshan is making every effort to be fully prepared for the T&U Cups 2016 and, in particular, a team of municipal officials was sent to neighboring metropolitans to learn experiences in running international sports events to ensure best possible organization and services. Du hoped that BWF would provide more advice and inputs to help make the T&U Cups 2016 an internationally acclaimed high-level event.
Mr. Lund commented that Kunshan was a “trustworthy partner” with not only strong social support, state-of-the-art competition facilities and excellent organizing capabilities, but more importantly, the determination to face and overcome challenges. He believed that the T&U Cups 2016 would be a great success.
