Qiandeng: Home to Ancient Slate-paved Alleyway

Qiandeng Town is a place blessed with prosperity, where a 1,500-meter slate-paved alleyway remains well preserved, lined with buildings dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1912) Dynasties and the Republic of China (1912-1949). It is the birthplace of the patriotic scholar Gu Yanwu (1613-1682) known for his advocacy “Everyone is responsible for the fate of the world” which has inspired myriads of aspiring people to serve their country. It is also the native place of Gu Jian (ca.1368), founder of Kunqu, one of the oldest Chinese operas that has influenced many other theatre forms. Visit the picturesque water town to discover the breathtaking antiquities such as the slate-paved alleyway, ancient residential houses and Qinfeng Tower, along with the lasting legacy of the ancient Liangzhu culture, and the long history of opera and religion.
